“Updated as discussed” is the most expensive sentence in a digital binder. It tells the reviewer nothing about where to look, what changed, or whether the underlying concern was judgement or evidence. Closing notes on the first pass is a writing skill as much as a technical one.
Answer the question, then point
Structure replies in three beats: direct answer, location of evidence, residual risk if any. Example: “Existence tested via 14 February count observation — photos and sheets linked under INV-EXIST-count-obs. Two locations deferred to roll-forward; listed on open items with owner.”
EQCR notes need the same discipline
Cold reviewers often reopen files because replies hide behind internal jargon. Spell out the assertion and the procedure even if the partner already knows the engagement. Future you — or a new senior — will thank you during archive.
When you disagree
If the note asks for work outside methodology, say so plainly and escalate. A vague “will consider” keeps the note open and the hours ticking. Document the decision path in the workpaper, not only in chat.
Module five of Workpaper File Integrity drills these patterns with timed exercises.
